As we approach the year’s end, this exhibition captures the vibrant spirit of Palma’s art scene, offering a unique celebration of winter’s beauty. Through diverse styles and perspectives, these artists illuminate the season’s depth and subtle brightness, inviting viewers to experience a harmonious blend of warmth and light that reflects Mallorca’s winter charm.

SIF MEINCKE

Sif Meincke (b.1974) is a Danish photographer.

Sif Meincke has developed a strong voice in both portrait and art photography. Known for her unique ability to capture mood and emotion, her works often traverse the realms of fantasy and reality. Through a minimalist yet evocative aesthetic, Meincke’s images are at once timeless and immediate, drawing viewers into the personal stories behind each scene.

Her photographs have become a part of various collections, including those at Manon Les Suites and Guldsmeden Babettein Copenhagen. She has held notable exhibitions at Øksnehallen and Frederiksborg Castle Museum, with more recent works exhibited internationally in 2024.

For the first time, In The Gallery presents an exhibition featuring the work of art photographer Sif Meincke. The exhibition, you can sail without wind, offers an unexpected perspective on urban life, using the harbour as a setting for calm, reflection, and immersion. Unlike the usual lively and bustling images associated with city harbours, this collection centers on the harbour as a peaceful space, a place where moments of silence and presence can emerge.

Sif Meincke’s  you can sail without wind focuses on this contrast, showing the urban landscape not through the lens of chaos or dynamism, but as an environment that fosters personal pause and reflection. With her careful composition, Meincke reveals how even the busiest parts of the city offer hidden moments of calm, where one can pause, breathe, and reflect on the movements of life. The exhibition highlights a much-needed breathing space in a world driven by progress and efficiency. It reminds us of the harbour’s timeless presence in the cityscape—a bridge between human activity and the natural rhythms of the water.

New Works by Merete Hansen

It is the painterly qualities that are at the fore when Merete Hansen composes her powerful, colorful pictures. With her commitment to the painting’s ability to communicate on its own terms, she works with subjects where the narrative is toned down to make room for the formal expressions that never completely let go of their anchoring in the figuration.

Since the beginning of Merete Hansen’s artistic work, the portrait, the model study and the set-up have been the central focal points and have over time been supplemented with cow skulls, ship and harbor motifs. Inspired by cubism’s ideas about image construction, she uses the recognizable motifs as building blocks, which are taken apart, broken down and built up again in elaborate color plans and shapes.

 It is especially the color experience that is the actual content of the image. Merete Hansen creates both space and sound out of shades of gray and the colors of the rainbow scale, and despite a penchant for the darker shades of the palette, the images are far from gloomy.
