TRANSFERENCE 2: JØRGEN JOHANSSON

10 March – 14 April 2018

In The Gallery is proud to present Transference, a show concept presenting works by the two artists Stephan Schnedler and Jørgen Johansson. The works of both artists tackle the concept of recreating a place, which may never have existed, addressing the notion of “the unsaid” and challenge the perception of the viewer.

In the late 1990’s Jørgen Johansson took his polaroid series Urban Jungle at the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Two decades later he found the series in his archives. The images, which had slowly started to erode, had taken on a new visual quality. Before they disappeared entirely Johansson decided to scan the series and re-activate it in its colourful and poetic juxtapositions. By nature photography as a medium is an instant moment frozen in time – likewise these stiff and stuffed animals are positioned, as were they still out in nature living the life they left behind over a hundred years ago. Johansson’s series examines the endeavour to conserve a long gone instance, and the haunted feeling that comes through reliving it.
