JULIEN MAUVE: WHEN LIGHTS OUT
21.02.14 – 29. 03.14
Opening Night 21. FEBRUARY 5.00 – 7.00 P.M.
In The Gallery is pleased to announce the solo exhibition, When Lights Out with the French artist Julien Mauve.
Poetically captivating and narrative based photographs from the series After Lights Out form the basis for this February exhibition. With artistic references to artists such as Philip-Lorca di Corcia, Jeff Wall, Duane Michals, Mac Adams and Gregory Crewdson, Mauve introduces the viewer to a beautiful and recognizable yet worrying universe.
The exhibited works focus on a certain element – the absence of artificial light. Only a single source – a small house window, a light tower or a bunch of pink balloons – permits as a surprising and striking element the light and optimism to penetrate the darkness.
Mauve´s photos pose questions of various kinds. What happens if we allow darkness to take over the world? How does light form life and the world surrounding us? The visual stories are aesthetic reflections on major issues – symbols of hope in a dark and alienated world and representatives of a new beginning.
Julien Mauve was born in 1984 in Paris where he continues to live and work. Exhibitions include Lonely Window, Le Salon de la Photo, stand SONY, PAris (2013), Hopeless Romantic, MAP festival, Toulouse (2013) and Back To Childhood, Espace Beaurepaire, Paris (2012). Last year he was one of five artists selected by a professional jury to display his work following the SFR Jeunes Talents competition at the 17th edition of the art fair PAris Photo., 2013.
WHEN LIGHTS OUT can be seen until Saturday 29th March 2014.
